Exciting News: After February Break, As part of our penguin unit, we are going to adopt a penguin!!!! Our PTA is going to fund this event for us. It will allow us to help a penguin in need. We will be working with the WWF and our class will vote on what type of penguin we want to adopt. As a part of this, we will get a bag, a fact sheet and a stuffed animal. Once we receive this, the penguin will begin to go home with a different child every night.
More information will follow. THANK YOU PTA!
The penguin we chose was the Emperor Penguin Chick!!! WE are so excited and hopefully it is here after break!

We had our fire safety demonstration from the New Salem Fire Department and got a chance to see the truck and spray the water. We learned some valuable lessons today.
1: We need to know our address and a phone number!
2. Do we have enough working smoke detectors in our house? And let them hear what it sounds like!
3. Do we have an exit plan (have we practiced a fire drill) that has a meeting place in our front yard?
4.*** Please see the attached flyer on the email about the open house that is happening at the New Salem Fire Department this Saturday! They are lots of things to do and see and they are giving out free smoke detectors.
Indoor recess-We will have a gym or an indoor classroom in order to play.
*****************Outdoor recess- IF it is not raining- or too cold, they will be outside for recess. Please make sure to dress your child appropriately to be outside at recess. They will need coats, hats, and mittens as they are outside for almost 1/2 hour and sometimes it can get really chilly.
You are welcome to leave them in school(in their cubby). PLEASE make sure to label all pieces. If you are leaving these items in school, a reusable bag works best! (This is awesome to see them all dressed and outside in the snow with all of their snow gear on!- Thank you!)
If and when it snows, please make sure to have snow pants, boots, and all of the above items. If they have all of these items, they will be allowed to play in the snow!!

- Birthday Parties- I have posted a date (only one per month) and we will celebrate all of the students that are having a birthday in that month. This will be on the birthday page of this website. Please coordinate with the group of parents who have birthdays during that month. Please make note of time.
*Please be sure to send in a spare set of clothes as well as a smock for Art class. If your son/daughter uses the spare clothes, please be sure to replace them as soon as possible. It is greatly appreciated.
Fire drills! We will practice these all year long.
Lock down drill- we will practice these throughout the year.
Telephone- You are able to leave me a message on the phone. It comes through to my email and I will have to return your phone call. Our school phone number is 518-765-2382-my extension is 582.
Email- If you have an urgent matter(such as picking your son/daughter early) please email me, BUT ALSO include Joanne Murphy-[email protected] . You will also want to contact transportation or Kids Club if you are changing your usual dismissal.
ReadingOur essential question of the week was : How do we get our food?
This week we have discussed the many ways we can get our foods. We read many different non fiction books that help us understand where our food comes from, how it is harvested, and ready for consumers to purchase. Within this weekly unit, we discuss spelling words, new vocabulary words, new high frequency words, new spelling patterns, different phonetic sounds, and much much more! We are also learning about the 5 food groups and how much of each foods we should consume in a day. We looked at a healthy plate and it's contents as well as investigating our daily snacks and looking at their nutritional value. . Reading Strategies that we discuss throughout the year. Please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions. *FIRST AND MOST IMPORTANT - 1.Take a picture walk through the book and get their brains ready and thinking about what the book will be about. And help them to focus any past experiences they have with this particular topic. If they are reading a book about snails, then can think of a time when they saw one in the garden and what it looked like, etc. Or if they are reading a book about going on a hike, they can think of a time they when on a hike, and they can hopefully recall the events of the hike. Or if they haven't gone on an official hike, they can take a picture walk through the book and get an idea what it would be like. *2.Sound it out- remembering the MANY MANY different rules we have learned through phonics instruction SOMETIMES this can be tricky as our vowels make MULTIPLE sounds. I always encourage them to try the short vowel and then try the long vowel sound and see which word is actually a word! *3.skip the unknown word- but make sure to go back and reread the sentence and try to see what would fit in that space *4get your mouth ready for the sounds you see in the word and work really hard at blending it together. No one strategy will work all of the time, when one doesn't work, try the next one and try to exhaust as many as you can before you "tell them the word". ******************************* HOMEWORK! - The students did a FANTASTIC job bringing in their reading logs this week. They even got to share one of their favorite books they read this week and why. Thank you for helping them with this. It is so important that you take the time to read with your child each and every night. To start the year off, we would recommend that you and your son/daughter read for at least 15 minutes. Please have them fill in the reading log. And please have your son/daughter bring it in on Friday's. ********************************************************* With our new Wonders program, it does have spelling imbedded in it. However, we are not going to assign the spelling words to the kids at this point. (We are doing it all in class) *********************************************** Please practice the snap words nightly if they do not know them automatically. Tools/ not Toys
